BIRMINGHAM (TAB) — Police are investigating the killing of Karen Louise Shahan in her home on Hugh Circle. Shahan’s husband, Richard, serves as the children and families pastor of First Baptist Church, Birmingham. The church also owns the home off of Lakeshore, where Homewood Police said it appeared the home was targeted and was found in disarray on July 23. Karen Shahan’s mother-in-law became concerned when she did not pick her up as they had previously discussed and went to check on her. The mother-in-law called the church and a First, Birmingham, support staff member notified 911. Homewood police Sgt. Andrew Didcoct said officers found Shahan in her home about 11:15 a.m. when they arrived. Didcoct did not say how she died, but said it was apparent that she was murdered, according to al.com. “We don’t know if this is random, a burglary gone bad or what,” Didcoct told al.com. First, Birmingham, released a letter July 25 stating the death of Karen Shahan is still under investigation and the cause of her death is still undetermined. Funeral visitation will be held at First, Birmingham, July 27, 11 a.m. with a memorial service at 12 p.m. A full report will be in the Aug. 1 issue of The Alabama Baptist.
