BIRMINGHAM (TAB) — Unity Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, was struck by lightning late Aug. 12 and caught on fire, abc3340.com reported. Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Quinton Brown believes the lightning started the fire that eventually spread to the roof and steeple, causing the roof to collapse on the sanctuary and ending in a “complete loss,” according to abc3340.com. At press time, church officials were waiting to hear if the educational building was salvageable.
Pastor Gene Dockery told abc3340.com, “We’re not sad that it’s gone so to speak, because it’s going to get better.” Church members gathered at the church when they found out the building was burning, abc3340.com reported.
A full report on the fire will be in next week’s issue of The Alabama Baptist.
