Former minister Shahan waives preliminary hearing

BIRMINGHAM (TAB) — Richard Shahan appeared in court before Jefferson County Judge Shellie Watkins on Feb. 5. He and his attorneys waived the preliminary hearing, which would have determined if there was enough evidence to support the claim that Shahan murdered his wife, Karen, on July 23, 2013. John Lentine, one of Richard Shahan’s attorneys, said they decided to waive the preliminary hearing because they felt the case would move to the Jefferson County Grand Jury regardless of what evidence was presented Feb. 5. Richard Shahan previously served as children and families pastor at First Baptist Church, Birmingham.
