Advocacy urged for Christians in Iraq, Syria, Egypt

WASHINGTON (TAB, BP) — Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox representatives met in Washington on May 7 to release the “Pledge of Solidarity and Call to Action,” a statement in support of Christians and other religious minorities in three countries: Egypt, Iraq and Syria. The statement urges churches in the United States first to pray for Christians in these three countries, but also to become educated about each country and to urge the federal government to take action regarding the plight of Christians there. Nearly 190 leaders have signed the statement so far including Timothy George, dean of Beeson Divinity School at Samford University in Birmingham; Russell D. Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; R. Albert Mohlr Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.; and Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
