JUBA, South Sudan (MS, TAB) — A judge in Sudan May 15 has confirmed a death sentence of “apostasy” (leaving Islam) for a pregnant, young mother after she refused to recant her Christian faith.
Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, 27, was given 15 days after her conviction April 30 to return to Islam or be executed. She is the first person to be sentenced to death under Sudan’s apostasy law, according to Amnesty International.
Ibrahim is due to give birth at any time now, and her husband noted she has not received adequate medical care. He fears that will only continue as they await the birth of their second child.
A lawyer for the Justice Center in Sudan, which is handling Ibrahim’s case, said attorneys will file an appeal of the sentence May 18. “[Ibrahim] hopes that people stand with her and her family until she gets her freedom,” the attorney said.
