SBC entities back GuideStone challenge to health care law

DENVER, Colo. (TAB) — GuideStone Financial Resources recently received support from Southern Baptist entities in its challenge to the Obama administration’s contraception mandate. A friend-of-the-court briefing was filed May 27 by the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and it’s president, R. Albert Mohler Jr., calling on the Denver, Colo., federal appeals court to protect the religious liberty of GuideStone, the Southern Baptist Convention’s health and financial benefits organization. In the brief, the entities state that “a statute or regulation requiring a Southern Baptist individual or ministry to be complicit in conduct that the Christian faith teaches is morally wrong forces that person or ministry into an impossible choice — to either violate conscience or violate the law — and imposes a substantial burden on the exercise of religion.”
