Right-to-die advocate, cancer patient Maynard ends own life

PORTLAND, Ore. (BP, TAB) — Brittany Maynard, terminally ill cancer patient, ended her life Saturday by taking a lethal dose of prescription barbiturates at her Portland, Ore., home. The 29-year-old moved to Oregon because of the state’s Death with Dignity Act, which allows a patient to take a fatal drug dose, as long as he/she has no assistance. Maynard’s decision to end her life is a stark contrast to 13-year-old cancer victim Ethan Hallmark’s viewpoint. Hallmark, who died Sept. 26 after a 4-year fight against neuroblastoma, encouraged others in the midst of his suffering. “Even though my cancer’s been a lot of bad stuff, it’s been a lot of good stuff too. … I’ve grown closer to God; my family has. I would trade my relationship with God for anything.”
