Alabama probate judges ordered to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but order on hold

BIRMINGHAM (TAB) — U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade ordered all probate judges to allow same-sex couples to purchase marriage licenses May 21, but that order is on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court issues a ruling on same-sex “marriage” later this year.

Granade’s ruling came after four civil rights organizations — the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center — asked her to expand her February ruling, which struck down an Alabama law and constitutional provision banning same-sex “marriage,” according to Birmingham Business Journal.

The recent ruling overrides the Alabama Supreme Court’s March 3 order to halt probate judges’ issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
