COLUMBUS, Ohio (Jennifer Davis Rash) — More than 5,000 Southern Baptists gathered to pray during the Tuesday evening session of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) annual meeting.
People spent two hours in repentant prayer — in huddles, on their knees, on their faces, in their seats and at the altar — for prayerlessness, division, racism, prejudice and a multitude of other sins. They also prayed for their churches, the denomination, missionaries, the persecuted church, students, schools, the nation’s leaders and more.
“God, revive your church,” prayed SBC president Ronnie Floyd. “We pray tonight for spiritual awakening, the next great awakening.”
Alabama native and church planter Vance Pitman said, “The problem in America is not the lostness of America but the lack of desperation of the people of God.”
And the challenge is for everyone in attendance to take this focus on prayer back to their churches.
“May we know that now is the time for an awakening in America,” Floyd said.
