Second runoff ballot for SBC president set for tomorrow

St. Louis, Mo. (Jennifer Davis Rash) — Neither Steve Gaines nor J.D. Greear received more than 50 percent of the votes in the runoff election for SBC president because of 108 illegal ballots.

Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn., received 2,410 votes and Greear, pastor of The Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., received 2,306 votes.

But 2,413 votes would have been 50 percent plus one vote, which is what is needed to win, according to SBC parliamentarian Barry McCarty.

4,824 of the 7,237 messengers cast ballots in the runoff.

The second runoff election will take place at 10:58 tomorrow morning.
