The attempt to legalize a state-sponsored lottery in 1999 had an initial 65 percent approval rate, but The Alabama Baptist doggedly campaigned against the proposal. In the end, 54 percent of Alabamians voted it down. For its effort in helping rally support against the lottery, The Alabama Baptist received an award honoring its contribution to the proposal’s defeat.
